Citadel Paints

Citadel Paints

The world of miniature painting can be a daunting place if you take the briefest of looks on instagram or inside your local games store. There are loads of people giving you tips and contradicting advice. Other than the constant cry of 'thin your paints' here's a guide to one of the brands of paint available to you.

I use Citadel paints because I can get them from a brick and mortar store at the end of my road and ask advice from the people behind the counter. They also do free painting sessions for newbies which is really good of them. Their paints run the full gamete from preparation to sealing so you don't have to mess around with going to other stores. Games Workshop have tried to simplify the whole process by providing you with a handy guide for shading and highlighting.

The paints themselves are available for hand painting and they have paints specifically for airbrushing. Wishing the paint sets there are specific paints for specific jobs:

  • Technical

  • Base

  • Layer

  • Shade

  • Dry

  • Texture

Technical paints are an undercoat to help the paint adhere to the model or they cover very specific niche jobs such as rust, verdigris or blood splatter.

Base paints are the main colour of the area you are painting.

Layer paints provide levels of highlighting to a model.

Shades are inks that get into the details of the model and provide depth and shadows.

Dry are thick paints that pick out the highlights on your miniature when used with a special dry brush.

Texture paints are for basing your miniatures after you have painted them.

Warhammer TV provide an excellent rundown of how to paint a model from start to finish here and this was one of the best learning tools I've found. They have step by step how to paint guides for a lot of their miniatures and field questions as well.

Citadel Paints are available in stores and online. They are a little expensive as they range from £2.55 to £4.55 per pot or £10.50 to £17.00 for the cans of spray paint.

I really like the Citadel system and their step by step guides really help to develop your skills as a painter.

May you roll well!
